MediaTek and Four Partners Join Hands for the First Standalone 5G Network in the UK
July 09, 2020

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek recently announced that it has cooperated with Vodafone, Ericsson, Qualcomm, and Oppo to set up Vodafone’s first 5G SA (Standalone) network in the United Kingdom, the Economic Daily News reported on July 7. Using network slicing solution jointly developed by Qualcomm and Oppo to improve network performance, this new network was demonstrated by Vodafone using an Oppo smartphone powered by MediaTek Dimensity 5G chipset and Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. Meanwhile, Ericsson provides Vodafone with 5G infrastructure and equipment for the network, including its SA 5G New Radio software. This new step comes a year after Vodafone’s 5G SA network commercialization. The global shipments of 5G CPE in 2019 reached approximately 5.8 million units, and are estimated to grow by more than 60% in 2020 to approximately 10 million units, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government think tank and IT research institute in Taiwan.
